On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at 1:36 PM EDT (10:36 AM PDT / 5:36 PM UTC), the Moon slides directly in front of the Sun at 20°02' of Leo, and a New Moon becomes a total solar eclipse. Greatest eclipse follows minutes later at 5:47 PM UTC.
This is the opening event of the second eclipse season of 2026 and it definitely has a double dose of fire energy.
If you have been feeling like something in your life is reorganizing itself, changing or there's an upheaval with your comfort zone, but not sure what exactly is happening at the same time, this is why.
Let me walk you through what's going on, why this particular eclipse carries so much weight, and how you can work with it in a way that helps you feel grounded instead of flailing through it with eyes wide shut.
First, a Quick Refresher on Eclipses
Eclipses only happen near the lunar nodes, the two points where the Moon's orbital path crosses the ecliptic. That is why they arrive in seasons roughly every six months instead of showing up at every New and Full Moon. A solar eclipse is a New Moon on energy drinks. Every New Moon plants a seed and a solar eclipse plants one with force, on a timeline that you didn't really plan for. The story that begins here unfolds over roughly the next six months.
Total solar eclipses are the rarest and most dramatic version of this. The Moon covers the Sun completely, and for a couple of minutes the sky goes dark in the middle of the day. It can be both disorienting and amazing to witness.
Ancient cultures across the world read these eclipses as sacred moments. Many traditions still do. Both Hindu practice and Diné (Navajo) tradition treat eclipse time as a period for stillness, prayer, and staying inside rather than spectating. Whatever your own practice looks like, the underlying instinct is worth adopting...meaning... this is a good time to go quiet and pay attention.
The Degree That Matters: 20° Leo
The eclipse falls at 20°02' of Leo, which means it lands most directly on anyone with planets or chart angles between roughly 15° and 25° of the fixed signs: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius.
If that describes your chart, this eclipse is very personal to you. You are in a life turning point right now and I think you know it. While this is a purposeful turning point that will catapult you in the right direction, let's acknowledge that it can feel kinda yucky. That's ok though it's temporary.
Everyone else still feels this eclipse too just in different areas of their chart. Every chart contains all twelve signs, so Leo is somewhere in yours whether or not you have planets there. That area of your chart is what this eclipse is working on, and your rising sign is all you need to find it.

The South Node Is the What You Need to Understand
The lunar nodes shifted into Aquarius and Leo on July 26, 2026, and they will hold that axis through March 2028. This eclipse is the first one to occur since that shift, which makes it the true opening chapter of the Aquarius-Leo eclipse story. I wrote about the full arc of this cycle in my North Node in Aquarius post, and this eclipse is where the theory becomes lived experience.
The South Node is the familiar end of the nodal axis. It holds the energy of what you already know how to do, what comes easily, what feels like home, your comfort zone and what you reach for automatically when you want to feel safe. It is VERY comfortable and it is well-practiced. It is also where you can get stuck because in this life, we must move toward our North Node energy to grow.
So a solar eclipse conjunct the South Node can be a bit ermmm ... spicy. It opens a door and offers up opportunities but before you can get to them there's a "tax" to pay.
Leo is creative fire, warmth, generosity, the joy of being seen. Leo at the South Node knows how to work a room and get that applause. It also has a finely tuned instinct for what makes people like you.
That instinct is a skill, and it has probably served you well but remember that comfy zone, it can also become a cage.
The Aquarius Polarity
Directly across the wheel, the North Node in Aquarius is pointing at where this energy WANTS to go, which is toward community, the collective benefit, objectivity, the willingness to be one unified voice inside something greater.
Aquarius offers a specific kind of relief to Leo's exhaustion. It reminds us that you can step back from center stage and still matter and it also suggests that observation, contribution, and belonging to a group or community are their own forms of being front and center. Instead of doing it alone, now it's with others. Where South Node Leo wants to be the main character, North Node Aquarius reminds you that you can also be intertwined in something larger than yourself.

What Else Is Happening in the Sky
This eclipse chart is busy, and two kite patterns are active at the same time. A kite forms when a grand trine gets an opposition attached to one of its points, which gives all that easy flowing energy like a bulls-eye to hit.
Kite one centers on Venus in Libra, which sits opposite Neptune in Aries and trines both Uranus in Gemini and Pluto in Aquarius. This as a deep rework of what you value, how you relate, and where your money and energy go. Something superficial is losing its appeal while something unfamiliar is becoming interesting.
Kite two centers on Pluto in Aquarius, opposite Mercury in Leo and more widely Jupiter in Leo, trining Venus and Uranus. This is all about the internal dialogue and stories you repeat about who you are, what you are capable of, and what is just totally off the table for you. Hidden information may come up to the surface so keep your ears open.
Mars at 0° Cancer squares both Venus and Neptune, forming a T-square. We have friction here. This can show up as confusion in close relationships, a sudden realization that you're wearing rose colored glasses when it comes to someone in your life, or there might be something you want in your life but it seems impossible. Use discernment. The delulu is great but at what cost? Boundaries and standards are your friends this month.
The Sun and Moon trine Saturn in Aries. This is the grounded aspect, and I love that it is here. Saturn's support gives the eclipse structural integrity. You may experience an extra boost of confidence through getting work done or fulfilling commitments for example. If you use this eclipse to invest real time and resources into your creative life, Saturn will meet you half way.
Uranus in Gemini squares the nodal axis. This has been active since Spring and is now separating as Uranus moves forward and the nodes move back. The energy still impacts though and that may look like sudden timeline changes, plot twists, and unprocessed junk from the past that keeps resurfacing until you finally deal with it.
The Return of Your Sunshine Self
Leo is ruled by the Sun, so this eclipse temporarily blocks out its own ruler. This eclipse is about remembering, more than about becoming. Somewhere underneath the roles we take on and the reputation management and the carefully selected version of yourself, there is a way you naturally shine in the most authentic way. This is your sunshine self and it existed before you learned what other people wanted from you.
Total solar eclipses are the sky's way of turning the lights off so you can find your sunshine self again.
A Note on Free Will
