The Meaning & Explanation of Your Sun | Moon | Rising (Ascendent) Signs

Has someone ever asked what your "Big 3" are? If so, they were asking about the three most foundational pieces of your astrological birth chart: your Sun sign, your Moon sign, and your rising sign (also called your ascendant). The full birth chart is a pretty complex map of planets, houses, and relationships and these three placements are front in center .... right to the core of who you are, how you feel, and how you move through the world.

Think of your Big 3 as lenses through which your personality comes into focus.

Sun Sign: Your Identity and Life's Purpose

This is the one most people already know and is most popular to understand. When someone says "I'm a Scorpio" or "I'm a Gemini," they're probably talking about their Sun sign, and hoenstly it's a great place to start.

The Sun is the center of our solar system, and in astrology, it holds a very similar central role in your chart. It represents your identity, your vitality, and the overarching purpose of your life. When you have those chapters of life where you feel like you are living in alignment with your Sun sign's energy, you may feel more confident and alive. You may feel more generous and outgoing too.

Your Sun sign describes the particular style in the way your life purpose unfolds or reveals itself. For example, a Sagittarius Sun, might feel most like themselves when they are exploring new places or ideas. A Cancer Sun feels most in alignment and alive through creating spaces and environments of warmth caring for others and

A useful way to think about the Sun is that it is your personal source of power. Think Solar Energy. What does solar energy do? It creates energy from the Sun to power up different things. When you're plugged into the energy of your Sun sign, everything else in your life tends to flow with more understanding and direction. When you're disconnected from it, you might feel uninspired or stuck.

The Moon Sign: Your Emotional World and Physical Needs

If the Sun is your life's mission and life force, the Moon is your like your daily maintenance plan that you can refer to, to keep your emotions in check and understood.

The Moon in astrology governs your emotional nature, instincts, the body, and the relationship to caring for both the self and others. It connects with a giving and receiving energy. The Moon cycles through phases every 29.5 days and your Moon sign reflects your own mood phases, inner most wants and needs.

The Moon also connects to the physical body. So your hunger cues, need for rest, your gut instincts (intuition) and it indicates what replenishes you on a cellular level. For example, a balanced Scorpio moon feels everything with intensity and you're ok sitting in the darkest shadows of life because you know transformation is coming (and you always see it through).

When we are young, many of us were taught (from societal expectations) to dismiss these higher consciousness signals. Listening to these signals doesn't make companies money so we must IGNORE IGNORE IGNORE! Ok I digress...but remember that the Moon in your chart is an invitation to stop doing that. Stop ignoring. Start listening. There's so much magic here. When your emotional and physical needs are met, you feel safe, connected, secure and balanced. When they're chronically ignored that's when we experience restlessness, moodiness, and this weird empty feeling can creep on us.

Your Moon sign is your unique recipe for nourishment at the soul level. Honoring this energy is not as hard as it may seem and once you know what to look for, it makes connecting even easier.

The Rising Sign: Your Motivation and Personal Presence

Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign is the sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born. Because the horizon shifts about every two hours as the Earth rotates, your rising sign is extraordinarily precise. It reflects both the day and time you were born, and from what exact location on Earth. The rising sign is why many astrologers consider it a very intimate and personally representative point in your entire chart.

The rising sign describes your motivation for being alive. It's that amazing spark that pushed you onto your particular path and it's the placement that keeps you going. An example of this is if you are a Leo rising, you are bold and loud and very generous. You love to make an impression and when it comes to the people you love most, you love them in abundance! Overall, your ascendant is the instinct that points you in the direction of your Sun and your life's purpose.

Beyond motivation, your rising sign also shapes how you appear to others. This includes the way you carry yourself on daily basis, the energy you carry when you first walk into a room, the impression you make before you speak (body language). Yeah all of this connects to your Ascendent.

In traditional astrology, the ascendant was called horoskopos, a.k.a "the hour marker." It's so central to the structure of your that it determines which sign rules each of your twelve houses, which in turn shapes how every other planet in your chart operates. This is why knowing your birth time matters if you want a super accurate understanding instead of a general one. Without knowing your birth time, calculating your rising sign accurately isn't possible. That said, even without a birth time, meaningful work with a chart is absolutely still possible it just becomes more general and focuses on overall energy of sigsn.

The Chart Ruler

One more concept worth knowing here is that every zodiac sign is associated with a ruling planet, and whichever planet rules your rising sign becomes your chart ruler. I'll call this The Navigator of your life. It's the planet whose themes and placement in your chart point you toward your greatest amount of potential.

If you're a Virgo rising, for example, your chart ruler is Mercury, the planet of intellect, communication, and analytical thinking. Leaning into Mercurial qualities, sharpening how you think, speak, and process the world around you, will activate your purpose in very meaningful ways as you travel from chapter to chapter of life. Knowing your chart ruler gives you another powerful layer of self-understanding.

Putting It All Together

Here's a quick recap to put it altogether:

Sun sign → Your identity, life force, and overarching purpose
Moon sign → Your emotional nature, physical needs, and relationship to self-care
Rising sign → Your motivation for living, your personal presence, and the structure of your chart
Chart ruler → The planet that steers you toward your fullest potential

Together, these three placements, your "big three," give you a powerful but also practical starting point for understanding yourself through astrology. They don't tell you everything, but they open doors to creating a greater understanding of your physical and soul self.

New Moon in Pisces | March 18, 2026

In just a couple of days we will be experiencing the first New Moon since the last Solar Eclipse. This moon will closeout eclipse season and opens up a new lunar cycle. Pisces (the sign of spirituality, flow, emotions) is the last sign of the zodiac so we are preparing to begin a new astrological year soon!

Pisces in a New Moon represents endings and beginnings at the same time!

So let's talk about what this new moon in Pisces brings as well as what other alignments are coming into play around the same time.

During the new moon in Pisces we are encouraged to really look inward. Because new moons are literally dark (we can't see them in the sky) they symbolize a more quiet, slower and deeper movement that we should be taking. With Pisces in the mix, we will be able to hone in on our spiritual side with more ease.

So what does this actually mean for you? Whatever you have going on in your life right now that you are feeling should be coming to an end, or a maybe there is a change you've been thinking about making, this energy will help you get more in alignment with understanding what you need to do to get yourself back in alignment.

At the same time, understand that this moon is not the time to take action on anything if you can avoid it. It's the energy of getting still and paying attention to what your higher self is telling you. Meditate on your inner vocals and what they are saying and recommending. This is a highly potent time to think about your dreams (feel the feeling of being IN THEM), using your intuition to guide you and trust those gut feelings.

Also understand that because of the Piscean energy we may experience some mind fog, lack of clarity or something in between but this is because we may not be at a point where we need to have all of the answers but fall back on that trust.

WHO FEELS THIS NEW MOON THE MOST?
Mutable signs, this is your new moon honey!

If you are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces (especially in the late degrees) as well as early degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn.

If you're not sure what degree your sign is in, you can use my instant chart form here. It will open in a new tab, so you don't lose your place. Just CLICK HERE to fill it out.

This will highly impact your life trajectory so pay attention. You are at the precipice of one chapter closing and another opening.

OTHER KEY ALIGNMENTS & ENERGY

⭐Saturn + Neptune
→ New 36-year cycle beginning. This is where we turn our dreams into reality through flow, devoted processes and patience.

⭐Uranus → Creative breakthroughs, flashes of insight and definitely divine downloads.

⭐Pluto → Deep personal transformation that ripples into the collective consciousness. Be EXTRA mindful of your thoughts and what you're manifesting. Do your part to contribute to the greater good of humanity through your thoughts and practices.

⭐Retrograde Mercury + North Node (March 17) → What have you been holding back? Say it out loud and to whoever needs to hear it, but speak from a place of meaning, higher perspective and with an objective lens. Meaningful conversations are so damn karmic right now.

⭐Venus square Jupiter (March 18) → Heyyy boost of confidence today! Just be mindful of overindulging and know when enough is enough.

Sun enters Aries + Mercury stations direct (March 20) → The astrological new year begins and any plans that have had to take a back seat are encouraged to start moving again. Details still need double-checking though since Mercury has a post retrograde shadow period and will take until the beginning of April to fully chill out.

⭐Jupiter + Mars (trine on March 21) → This is a strong day to channel your drive and put it into meaningful projects that benefit your life path, your purpose and the collective.

Neptune cazimi (March 22) → Peak intuition for humanity! This is a powerful day for spiritual and creative practices, focus on opening your third eye and crown chakras more because those downloads will be flowing in. Trusting what you feel over what you can prove with data. In other words, just because you can't see it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Intuition over proof. You get my drift?

ACTION ITEMS
  • Pay attention to dreams and synchronicities and journal or notate with a voice recorder what they were about.
  • Don't be hesitant or afraid to release what must go! You'll know. You'll feel it. Allow it to carry on without you because something better is trying to come in for you.
  • If you're uncertain about something that's totally fine. Sit with it. Understanding and clarity will come at the exact time you need it to.
  • Fact-check your fantasies because Pisces energy can sometimes blur reality. Dream but also balance with grounding practices.
  • Healthy conversations that begin now and prior to Mercury going direct will carry some extra and deeper meaning and weight.

The Planet Parade, But It's SO MUCH MORE!

The Astrology Right Now Is Big. Here's What That Actually Means.

We are in an extremely rare period where multiple outer planets are shifting signs almost back to back. Also, tonight we will be able to see 3-4 of 6 planets with our eyes line up in the sky. The planet lineup is : Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Uranus and Neptune (and possibly Mercury) can be also seen with a telescope.

These are slow-moving planets. When they move, whole generations feel it. So aside from the planet parade let's take a look at what else is going on:

Something unusual is happening in the sky right now, and you don't have to be a seasoned astrologer to feel it. Many people are reporting a that they feel life is moving at a faster pace, emotions are running much higher, and the world feels like it's cracking and shifting beneath their feet. There's a real spiritual and astrological reason for that and understanding it can actually help.

Right now, several of the outer planets are changing signs within a relatively short span of time. The outer planets move slowly. Some take decades to complete a single journey through the zodiac. So when multiple ones shift at once, it tends to coincide with genuine cultural turning points. This is the kind of astrology that helps us explain why whole eras and generations feel like they're ending and beginning at the same time.

Let's walk through what's happening, one planet at a time.

♇ Pluto Has Moved Into Aquarius♒

Pluto is a dwarf planet and is the slowest of the outer planets, spending roughly 20 years in each sign. It governs transformation. It's the planet of the deep, sometimes uncomfortable kind that strips away what no longer works so something more honest can take its place. Aquarius, the sign it's now moving through, is associated with communities, collective systems, and technology.

What this means practically is that the way power is organized in society is undergoing a long, slow restructuring. Centralized institutions are losing some of their grip, while networks, grassroots communities, and technology-driven systems are gaining influence. Pluto will remain in Aquarius into the 2040s. What is happening is we are starting a new chapter of a whole new era!

For you personally, this is a good time to think about the communities you belong to and the systems you participate in. Where do you have more influence than you realize? Where might you be giving power away unnecessarily?

♃ Jupiter Is Moving Through Cancer ♋

Jupiter is the great amplifier of the zodiac. Wherever it travels, things tend to grow, expand, and become more visible. Right now it's moving through Cancer, the sign most associated with home, family, emotional safety, and a sense of belonging.

The practical effect of this is that personal and emotional topics are carrying extra weight in public conversation right now. Questions about where we come from, who our people are, and what we're actually trying to protect are feeling more urgent than usual and that's not just you. It's the human collective. This is a global scale kind of movement.

Jupiter leaves Cancer in mid-2026, so this is a meaningful but temporary window. It's worth using it intentionally. Tend to your home life. Repair relationships that matter to you. Let yourself care about the things you actually care about, without apology. Help your neighbors and community. Expand your light and influence of love. It's needed.

♆ Neptune Has Entered Aries ♈

Neptune is the planet of imagination, idealism, and the dissolution of boundaries. It shapes the collective mood more than most people realize and it's the planetary force behind cultural dreams, spiritual movements, and the stories a society tells about itself. Aries, the sign it's now entering, is bold, action-oriented, and very much concerned with identity, movement and courage.

Together, this combination is inspiring a lot of people to fight passionately for what they believe in. That energy can be genuinely beautiful. It can also lead people, and entire movements to act on conviction before they've checked whether the vision is grounded and realistic.

The practical takeaway here is not to become cynical, but to stay in a state of discernment. Ask good questions. Make sure the courage you're feeling is pointed at something real. Inspiration is a gift; impulsiveness is a pitfall and you will fall hard. Right now, the two are living very close together so remember that discernment is the key here.

♄ Saturn Is Also in Aries ♈

While Neptune dissolves structure, Saturn demands structre. Saturn is the planet of discipline, accountability, and long-term strategy and it's currently sharing Aries with Neptune, which creates tension.

Aries wants to move fast and figure out the details later. Saturn says: stahhhp not so fast. This combination has a way of exposing leaders and plans that look bold or scary on the surface but lack the substance to last. The good news is that it equally rewards anyone willing to do the slower, less glamorous work of actually building something sound and with patience.

If you're feeling impatient with your own progress right now, Saturn in Aries is a good reminder that durable long lasting things take time. Speed that bypasses integrity, tends to unravel quicker than we can anticipate. Pace yourself, do the work properly, and trust that it will hold.

♅ Uranus Is Moving Into Gemini ♊

Uranus is the planet most associated with disruption, innovation, and the kind of change that arrives before you're ready for it. It's now entering Gemini, the sign that governs communication, information, language, and the exchange of ideas.

What this signals is a significant acceleration in the way information moves and technology develops, particularly around media, artificial intelligence, and communication platforms. Some of this will be genuinely exciting. New ideas will spread faster. New voices will find audiences. And some of it will simply add to the nonsense we are working to get rid of. We will have beautiful breakthroughs and some annoyances.

The most practical thing you can do under this transit is take your attention and energy seriously. It is a finite and valuable resource. Be intentional about what you read, what you engage with, and what you let shape your thinking. In a noisy information environment, the ability to focus becomes one of the most important skills you can cultivate.

A Note on Eclipse Season

Alongside all of this planetary activity, we're also moving through eclipse season. Eclipses have a way of accelerating whatever has been slowly building underground. They're less about creating new circumstances and more about revealing what has already been hanging around in our lives, and shifts come much faster than feels comfortable.

If life has felt unusually intense, like things are surfacing that you didn't expect, that's very much in keeping with eclipse energy. It tends to pass, but it's worth paying attention to what's being revealed, because it's usually significant.

What Does All of This Mean For You?

When multiple outer planets shift signs within a short period, the underlying structures of society start to reorganize. That's genuinely and literally disorienting, even for people who don't follow or believe in astrology.

It can show up as information overload, unexplained emotions, cultural norms feeling very unstable, or a feeling that technology is moving faster than human beings can process.

None of this means things are falling apart. Reorganization and collapse are not the same thing. Let me say it louder in case my mic broke:

Reorganization and collapse are not the same thing.

What it does mean is that the strategies and habits that served you well in the last decade may need to be updated.

A few things that tend to help during transitions like this are staying genuinely grounded in your daily life rather than getting swept up in constant news and political updates. Like stay informed but don't be consumed. Building things slowly and with care rather than chasing speed helps move through the energy easier, and making decisions based on where you actually want to be in ten years.

We are in a transition period, but that's not a reason for alarm. Change is inevitable and although this change is extremely difficulty, it's or a more peaceful era of humanity. The people who navigate these shifts best are usually the ones who stay curious, grounded, and keep their focus on what genuinely matters to them.

ASTROLOGY TERMS FOR THE NEWBIES

If you're newer to astrology, here are some of the terms used above:

Outer planets refer to Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Because they move so slowly, their influence tends to be generational rather than personal and they shape the backdrop of an era rather than the details of an individual day.

A transit simply means a planet's current position in the sky as it moves through the zodiac. When astrologers talk about a transit, they're describing what a planet is doing right now, in real time.

A sign is one of the twelve divisions of the zodiac. Each sign gives the planet moving through it a particular quality or style of expression.

A conjunction happens when two planets are positioned very close together in the sky. When this occurs, their energies blend and intensify each other.

Eclipses are supercharged New or Full Moons that tend to accelerate change and bring hidden things to the surface. They often mark turning points in both personal and collective stories.

We're living through something genuinely significant. Understanding the astrology behind it won't eliminate the uncertainty, but it can really help clarifiy questions or uncertain thoughts we have. It can paint a better picture of what we can expect so that we can prepare mentally, physically, spirutally.
