When the Veil Thins: Día de los Muertos Through an Astrological Lens

Every year as October wraps up, we hit one of the most powerful points in the zodiac .... Scorpio season. It’s a time when everything feels a little deeper, more emotional, and we can sense the intuition becoming greater as the veil thins. Right in the middle of this season falls Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday (November 1st - 2nd) that celebrates and honors loved ones who have crossed over.

The amazing part? The theme of this celebration line up almost perfectly with Scorpio energy. Let’s talk about why.

What Día de los Muertos Is Really About

Día de los Muertos is a beautiful celebration of life. Families create ofrendas, or altars, decorated with marigolds, candles, food, drinks, and photos of their ancestors. It’s believed that during this time, the spirits return to visit, and their loved ones welcome them with all the things they enjoyed in life.

The whole purpose of this holiday is to remember to keep connection alive between the living and the departed. It’s colorful, vibrant, and full of love.

Now, when you look at this through an astrological lens, you start to see some major parallels.

Scorpio Season: Transformation, Depth, and the Cycle of Life

Scorpio season runs roughly from October 23 to November 21, which means Día de los Muertos lands right in the heart of it. Scorpio is ruled by Pluto (and traditionally Mars). These are planets connected to change, passion, and rebirth.

Scorpio energy pushes us to face what’s hidden. Any emotions we usually avoid or the parts of life that make us uncomfortable. That’s why this season is known for deep reflection, shadow work, and sometimes we apply total transformation.

When you think about it, that’s exactly what Día de los Muertos is doing too. It’s an invitation for us to face what we know as death and view it not as something dark, but as part of a natural cycle. If you've read about my beliefs then you already know that I am deeply connected to my loved ones that are exploring and living on the other side of the veil. This is a time where we are acknowledging endings while celebrating what continues to live on through memory, love, and spirit.

The Veil Gets Thinner

Astrologically and energetically, this time of year is when the veil between worlds feels extremely thin. For me I feel like I have one foot on Earth and one foot in the ether for about 4-5 days. I always get a bit sad when it's over because this is just the easiest time for me to connect personally. But I thoroughly enjoy the time I get to spend with my loved ones while they are so obviously present. This is a time where the Sun sits halfway between the fall equinox and winter solstice and serves as a turning point that’s been recognized for thousands of years.

I'll also give a shout out to the Gaelic celebration of Samhain (pronounced SAH-WIN) where the end of the harvest season is marked and the preparation for the darker part of the year comes. The celebration begins on October 31st where communication with ancestors is most prominent. You see, the thinning of the veil is recognized and sacred for many cultures.

Many people feel more intuitive, emotional, or spiritually sensitive during this time, and it’s no coincidence either. When we zoom out and take a look at the collective energy of Scorpio, it opens the door to the unseen. Día de los Muertos takes that same idea and turns it into something tangible — food, candles, flowers, laughter, family, and remembrance.

Both are ways of saying, “We’re still connected, even across worlds.”

Not to get all dark on you, well actually yeah let's get dark for a minute (we are preparing for Winter after all), but if you sat in a peaceful space in your home at night with some white (representative of peace and purity) lit candles (LED or real, whatever feels better), took in some slow deep breaths with hand over heart and just listened, you will hear the footsteps of those who have come before you and those who are protecting and guiding you. Between October 31st - November 2nd.

How to Work With This Energy

Here are a few simple, beginner-friendly ways to use this Scorpio + Día de los Muertos energy in your own life even if you don’t personally celebrate the holiday:

  1. Reflect on transformation. Ask yourself what’s been ending or shifting in your life lately. What’s trying to be reborn? Jot it down as thoughts come to mind.

  2. Honor your roots. Think about who came before you like family, mentors, ancestors, EVEN PETS and what qualities or lessons they passed down?

  3. Declutter your emotional space. Scorpio season loves a good purge. Journal, clean, or release something that’s been weighing on you.

  4. Light a candle for remembrance. You don’t have to build a full altar. Even one candle with the intention to honor those who came before you can be SO powerful.

  5. Embrace your intuition. Scorpio energy helps you tune into your gut. Trust your instincts, especially around endings and new beginnings.

Día de los Muertos and Scorpio season both remind us that death isn’t just about endings but it’s about renewal and new beginnings. One celebrates loved ones who’ve crossed over; the other teaches us how to shed old layers so we can evolve.

Both invite us to look a little deeper, honor what’s passed, and make peace with change.

So as you move through Scorpio season, take a few quiet moments to remember what (or who) helped shape you. Transformation is all encompassing of the life/death/life cycle. For those of us still livin' la vida loca on Earth, we are so blessed to have those on the other side rooting for us and guiding us.
